Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka is taking on additional responsibilities by overseeing the Department of Immigration and the Fiji Police Force, previously managed by National Federation Party (NFP) member Pio Tikoduadua. This transition comes after Mr. Tikoduadua voluntarily stepped aside amid an investigation concerning unauthorized passport issuances related to a human rights case involving Grace Road.

The situation prompted Mr. Tikoduadua to initiate an expedited investigation to understand how these irregularities occurred and to ensure that those responsible are held accountable. Following a careful assessment of the situation and with the authority granted by the Fijian Constitution, Prime Minister Rabuka announced that he would temporarily assume these roles to facilitate a thorough inquiry.

Mr. Tikoduadua will maintain his role as the Minister for Defence, where he oversees the Republic of Fiji Military Forces and Veterans’ Affairs, supported by Permanent Secretary Mason Smith. This reassignment will formally take effect on December 1, 2024.

Expressing gratitude for the Prime Minister’s understanding, Mr. Tikoduadua emphasized his commitment to serving the Fijian people in his defense role while the investigation unfolds.

This development highlights the government’s dedication to transparency and accountability in addressing concerns related to immigration practices. The proactive steps taken by both leaders indicate a commitment to uphold the integrity of Fijian governance, fostering public trust in institutions.

In summary, while challenges arise in governance, this situation presents an opportunity for improvement and accountability, ensuring that regulations are respected and that the citizens of Fiji can trust their government. This commitment to reform reinforces a hopeful outlook for future governance in the nation.
