Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has staunchly defended President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu against criticism regarding his suitability for presidential duties. Concerns about Ratu Naiqama’s health arose after he appeared to have difficulty during the opening of the 2025 Parliament session, leading to public debate and scrutiny on social media.
In response to these criticisms, Rabuka urged detractors to provide formal evidence to back their claims, referencing Section 26(3)(a) of the 2013 Constitution, which prohibits discrimination based on health status. He asserted, “Currently, I have no reasons to institute a medical board because he is performing as expected.”
Rabuka also noted that any determination about a president’s fitness for duty should be made by a medical board, should the need arise, as outlined in Section 89 of the Constitution. This section delineates the protocol for addressing claims of presidential incapacity.
Highlighting Ratu Naiqama’s qualifications, Rabuka pointed out his significant experience as a paramount chief and his impressive academic credentials, which include a Master’s Degree in International Development from Clark University in Massachusetts. This background underscores Ratu Naiqama’s capabilities as a respected leader in Fiji.
Anticipating the Special Parliamentary Sitting on October 31, which seeks to reaffirm Ratu Naiqama’s presidency, the Prime Minister expressed optimism in the potential for stability and unity under Ratu Naiqama’s leadership. This moment presents an opportunity for the nation to foster growth and maintain effective governance for all Fijians.
Moving forward, there is a hopeful sentiment that unity and effective leadership can navigate the current challenges, allowing Fiji to continue progressing toward its goals.
