Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has assured that George Speight does not pose a threat to Fiji and has expressed support for Speight’s involvement in the truth and reconciliation process. He emphasized that the Fijian community, particularly those of Indian descent, need not be concerned.

Rabuka stated that Speight’s participation is essential for uncovering the truth behind the 2000 coup, referring to himself as a victim due to Speight’s silence regarding his non-involvement. Speight was released along with seven others, including former military officer Shane Stevens.

“I think they are very safe; they have nothing to worry about from Mr. Speight nor Mr. Stevens,” Rabuka commented. He clarified that the government had no role in Speight’s release, which was decided by the Mercy Commission.

When questioned about whether Speight should face legal ramifications, Rabuka stated that his own role in the events is protected by the Constitution, referencing the 1990, 1997, and 2013 Constitutions.

He noted that he has not had any communication with Speight and confirmed he would also participate in the Truth and Reconciliation Commission alongside former president and military commander Ratu Epeli Nailatikau.
