Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has officially contacted President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere to express that he is the Coalition’s candidate for the presidency. Ratu Wiliame, whose four-year presidential term concludes on October 21, is currently attending Fiji Day celebrations abroad.

Mr. Rabuka stated during a media briefing that he would seek Ratu Wiliame’s formal approval upon his return. “I am waiting for His Excellency to get back so I can have him sign the approval. I have communicated my recommendation to him in a letter, and I will present it to him when he returns,” he explained.

A special session of Parliament is scheduled for October 31, where members will vote for Fiji’s next president. The Opposition is also anticipated to put forth their own nomination for the position.

In related news, nine independent MPs from the Opposition, led by Ioane Naivalurua, have declared their support for Mr. Rabuka’s nomination.
