Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka expressed his thoughts on the challenges faced by the Coalition Government over the past two years, noting that he experienced significant criticism during the lead-up to the 2022 General Election. He recalled being labeled a “snake” and facing various accusations, alongside a notable use of racial rhetoric.

Reflecting on his political journey, Mr. Rabuka stated, “I was demonised, accused of many things, and labelled a snake,” but emphasized that he is immune to personal insults. He mentioned that both he and former Prime Minister Jai Ram Reddy endured similar attacks during his earlier term from 1992 to 1999.

The Prime Minister highlighted that he and Professor Biman Prasad encountered comparable negative politics in the recent elections, which, while not personally affecting them, instilled fear in the electorate, particularly among the Indo-Fijian community. To address this apprehension, he introduced himself, stating, “I am Sitiveni Ligamamada Rabuka, whose favourite dish is dhal and rice.”

Mr. Rabuka affirmed that Professor Prasad would not have agreed to a Memorandum of Understanding for a coalition government unless there was mutual trust. He emphasized his commitment to dispelling fears and doubts regarding his integrity as a national leader, especially within the Indo-Fijian community.

He assured the public that they are collectively working towards rebuilding Fiji’s future as a united three-party coalition government. Looking ahead to the next election, Mr. Rabuka predicted a transformed electoral landscape compared to the past.
