Rabuka Nominates Coalition’s Pick for President: What’s Next?

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has informed President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere that the Coalition has chosen him for the presidency. Ratu Wiliame, whose four-year term concludes on October 21, is currently abroad for Fiji Day festivities. In a media statement, Mr. Rabuka mentioned that he would formally seek the President’s approval upon his return.

“I am waiting for His Excellency to come back, and I will have him sign the approval. I have recommended it to him via letter,” he said. A special session of Parliament is scheduled for October 31 to elect Fiji’s next president. The Opposition is also expected to present their nomination for the position.

In addition, nine independent MPs in the Opposition, led by Ioane Naivalurua, have expressed their support for Mr. Rabuka’s nomination.
