Rabuka Names His Pick for Fiji’s Next President

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has sent a letter to President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere to announce that the Coalition has chosen him for the presidential position. Ratu Wiliame is currently abroad for Fiji Day celebrations, and his four-year term is set to conclude on October 21.

In comments made to the media yesterday, Mr. Rabuka indicated that he would formally seek the President’s approval once Ratu Wiliame returns. “I am waiting for His Excellency to get back and I’ll get him to sign the approval. I have recommended it to him via letter. And I will give it to him when he gets back,” he stated.

A special session of Parliament is scheduled for October 31, during which members will vote for Fiji’s new president. The Opposition is anticipated to present their own nominee for the position as well.

Additionally, nine independent MPs from the Opposition, led by Ioane Naivalurua, have expressed their support for Mr. Rabuka’s nomination.
