Rabuka Calls for Truth: Will Speight Unveil the Past?

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has stated that he will continue to feel like a victim of the 2000 coup until its leader, George Speight, reveals the identities of those involved in the takeover of the Mahendra Chaudhry-led Government on May 19. In a press conference, Rabuka emphasized the significant role Speight plays in the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and urged him to share the truth.

When asked about his involvement in the 1987 coup, Rabuka maintained that his actions during the takeover of the Bavadra-led Government are documented within the 1990, 1997, and 2013 constitutions, describing his role as constitutional.

Rabuka noted that he has not spoken with George Speight since Speight’s release through a pardon granted by the President, following the Mercy Commission’s recommendation.

“I have not communicated or had the chance to talk with him,” Rabuka said.

The Prime Minister assured that all Fijians, particularly the Indo-Fijian community, are safe following Speight’s release. “They are very safe! They have nothing to worry about from his release along with Mr. Shane Stevens… Everything is normal, and we will alleviate any concerns,” he added.
