Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has stated that he will continue to be seen as a victim of the 2000 coup until coup leader George Speight reveals the identities of those involved in the takeover of the Mahendra Chaudhry-led Government on May 19. In a recent media conference, Rabuka emphasized the significant role Speight plays in the ongoing Truth and Reconciliation Commission process and urged him to disclose the truth.
When asked about his involvement in the 1987 coup, Rabuka maintained that his actions during the takeover of the Bavadra-led Government are already addressed in the 1990, 1997, and 2013 constitutions, asserting that his role is constitutional.
Rabuka also noted that he has not had the chance to communicate with George Speight since Speight’s pardon and subsequent release by the President, as recommended by the Mercy Commission. “I have not communicated nor have I had the opportunity to speak with him,” Rabuka stated.
In light of Speight’s release, the Prime Minister reassured all Fijians, particularly the Indo-Fijians, of their safety. “I think they are very safe! They have nothing to worry about from his release along with Mr. Shane Stevens… Everything is normal, we will alleviate any concerns,” he remarked.
