Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has expressed that he will continue to feel like a victim of the 2000 coup until George Speight reveals the identities of all those involved in the takeover of the Mahendra Chaudhry-led government on May 19. In comments made to the media, Rabuka emphasized Speight’s significant role in the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and called upon him to share the truth.
When asked about his involvement in the 1987 coup, Rabuka stated that his role in the takeover of the Bavadra-led government is documented in the constitutions of 1990, 1997, and 2013, asserting, “It is constitutional.”
Rabuka also mentioned that he has not had the chance to communicate with George Speight since Speight’s pardon and subsequent release by the President, following recommendations from the Mercy Commission. “I have not communicated nor have had the opportunity to speak with him,” he said.
Addressing concerns regarding the safety of Fijians, especially Indo-Fijians, following Speight’s release, Rabuka reassured the public, stating, “I think they are very safe! They have nothing to worry about from his release together with Mr. Shane Stevens… Everything is normal, we will remove that apprehension.”
