Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has expressed that he will continue to feel like a victim of the 2000 coup as long as George Speight, the coup leader, does not disclose the identities of those involved in the takeover of the Mahendra Chaudhry-led Government on May 19.
In a media statement, Rabuka highlighted Speight’s significant role in the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and encouraged him to reveal the truth about the events surrounding the coup.
When asked about his own involvement in the 1987 coup, Rabuka stated that the circumstances surrounding the takeover of the Bavadra-led Government are detailed in the constitutions of 1990, 1997, and 2013.
“It is constitutional,” he affirmed.
Rabuka noted that he has not had the chance to speak with George Speight since his pardon and release, which was recommended by the Mercy Commission and approved by the President.
“… Nothing, I have not communicated nor have had the opportunity to speak with him (George Speight),” he stated.
The Prime Minister reassured all Fijians, especially Indo-Fijians, that they are safe following Speight’s release.
“I believe they are very safe! They have nothing to worry about from his release together with Mr. Shane Stevens… Everything is normal; we will dispel any fears,” he added.
