In a historical event on November 10, 1978, Rabi Island celebrated the much-anticipated opening of its airstrip, marking a new chapter in transportation for the island’s community. Anne Livingston, the chief photographer for The Fiji Times at the time, was among the passengers on the inaugural flight, which brought great excitement, especially for the local children who witnessed an aircraft land for the very first time.

The airstrip was built in Panbiang village to serve the 3,000 residents of Rabi Island, located just off Buca Bay, between Vanua Levu and Taveuni, approximately 250 miles northeast of Suva. The construction of the airstrip came at a cost of $150,000, with every islander contributing to its funding. The community is hopeful that they will be able to recoup some of this investment through government support.

Fiji Air has announced that it will operate Islander services to the island three times a week, with a one-way fare set at $36, providing much-needed connectivity for the residents.

This development is a significant milestone for Rabi Island, which will not only enhance the island’s accessibility but is also expected to boost tourism and economic opportunities for the local community. The airstrip brings renewed hope for growth and connection for the islanders, creating a positive outlook for the future.

In summary, the opening of Rabi Island’s airstrip stands as a testament to community effort and resilience, fostering greater connectivity and potential prosperity for its inhabitants.
