In a significant milestone for Rabi Island, the newly constructed airstrip officially opened on November 10, 1978. Among those present to witness this historic event was Anne Livingston, the chief photographer for The Fiji Times at the time. This occasion marked the first aircraft landing at the airstrip, creating a palpable sense of joy, especially among the island’s children.

The airstrip, situated in Panbiang village, was built to serve the needs of the island’s 3,000 residents. With a construction cost of $150,000, funding for the project came primarily from the community, which is a testament to the residents’ commitment to improving their transportation options. They also sought assistance from the government to help recoup some of the expenses.

To facilitate travel between Rabi and the main islands, Fiji Air announced a scheduled Islander service operating three times a week, with one-way fares set at $36. This new air service is expected to enhance connectivity for the islanders, providing much-needed access to larger markets and services.

The opening of the Rabi airstrip represents not just a practical improvement in transportation but also a beacon of hope for the island’s future development, highlighting the importance of community initiatives in achieving shared goals.

Overall, the event signifies a positive advancement for the residents of Rabi Island, paving the way for greater opportunities and strengthened community ties.
