The participation in the Vodafone Kaji competition is seen as a valuable opportunity for the Ra district teams, according to Under 13 coach Varayame Ratu. He emphasized that their primary objective is to gain exposure and nurture the development of their young players. Notably, the team had only a week of training before the competition commenced yesterday at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva.

Despite facing challenges, such as not having proper training shoes, the teams are determined to compete vigorously at the national level. Comprising four teams across two age grades (U13 and U14), the players come from various areas, including Drauniivi, Bureiwai, and Bucalevu.

Ratu mentioned that the intention is not solely to win but to enhance the skills of the young talent within the team. He expressed optimism for their performance during the competition, stating, “we’ll try our best to win some of the games before we reach the main day.” He also noted the inspiring achievements of the Fijiana teams in both rugby 7s and 15s, which he believes can encourage the girls’ team and assist in their preparation for high school rugby.

With a focus on developing skills beyond the rugby field, Ratu acknowledged the varied talents of the students, explaining that while some excel academically, others shine in sports. The team has been holding three training sessions each day, beginning with a morning devotion to foster camaraderie and spirit.

Coach Ratu extended an invitation to the Ra community in Suva to come out and support their teams at the stadium, fostering a sense of unity and pride among the spectators.

This competition not only serves as a platform for talent development but also strengthens community ties and inspires the next generation of rugby players. It is a testament to the resilience and dedication of these young athletes and their coaches, who are committed to helping them grow on and off the field.
