The Queen Victoria School Under-18 rugby team, the defending champions of the Vodafone Deans Trophy, is concentrating on discipline and leadership as they prepare to face Marist Brothers High School in the quarterfinal match at Suva’s HFC Bank Stadium tomorrow.
QVS U18 captain Anare Tabakaucoro shared his thoughts in an interview, stating that while they respect Marist as a strong team, they are ready for the challenge despite Marist finishing third in their zone competition.
Tabakaucoro noted that adjusting to the current QVS team has been challenging for him as he did not play with them last year. However, he draws on lessons from the previous season regarding planning, preparation, and execution, contributing to their success in winning the Deans Trophy.
He expressed that their goal is to play for each other and honor their families, friends, and former players. The team’s motivation is also fueled by an appreciation for their parents’ sacrifices, given that several teammates have come from far, such as Vanua Levu, and many come from single-parent households.
Despite having experience with the Fijian Warriors and the Fiji Under-20 teams, Tabakaucoro emphasizes humility and faith, stating that all his achievements are due to God. The coaching staff has encouraged the team to aim for victory rather than just defend their title.
In contrast, the Marist Brothers High School U18 team has chosen to maintain a low profile and declined to participate in interviews ahead of the match.
