Discipline and leadership are the primary focuses for the defending champions of the Vodafone Deans Trophy, the Queen Victoria School Under-18 team, as they prepare to take on Marist Brothers High School in tomorrow’s quarterfinal at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva.
Anare Tabakaucoro, the captain of the QVS U18 team, shared these insights during an interview with SUNsports. “Our preparations have been straightforward, and we recognize that Marist is a formidable opponent,” he stated. “We have a lot of respect for them, despite their third-place finish in their zone competition.”
Tabakaucoro expressed that joining the current team has been challenging for him as he was not part of the squad last year. “I didn’t play with this team previously, but I strive to guide my teammates based on the strategies and practices that helped us win the Deans Trophy before,” he explained. “Our goal is to play for each other and for our families, friends, and alumni this season.”
He also highlighted the team’s motivation, which stems from acknowledging their parents’ sacrifices. “Our parents have always supported us, even when many teammates have come from as far as Vanua Levu, away from their families for extended periods,” he noted. “Numerous players have been raised by single parents, which drives us to give our best in every match.”
Despite his experience with the Fijian Warriors and the Fiji Under-20 teams, Tabakaucoro remains humble. “I make it a point to stay grounded and prioritize God in my life, as I believe everything happens for a reason,” he added. “Our coaching staff has emphasized that this year is not just about defending our title, but about winning anew.”
In contrast, the U18 manager from Marist Brothers High School stated that they preferred a low profile and chose not to partake in interviews ahead of the match.
