Discipline and leadership are the key focuses for the Queen Victoria School Under-18 team as they prepare to defend their Vodafone Deans Trophy title against Marist Brothers High School in the quarterfinals at HFC Bank Stadium in Suva tomorrow.
Captain Anare Tabakaucoro shared insights during an interview, stating that the team had a standard preparation and acknowledged Marist as a formidable opponent, despite their third-place finish in the zone competition.
Joining the QVS team this year posed challenges for Tabakaucoro, who was not part of the team in the previous season. He draws from past experiences to guide his teammates in planning and execution strategies that contributed to their previous victory in the Deans Trophy.
“We will play for each other again, for our family, friends, and the old boys this year,” Tabakaucoro said, emphasizing the team’s unity and purpose.
He highlighted the emotional connection the team members have with their families, particularly the sacrifices made by parents, some of whom travel long distances from Vanua Levu and have been separated from their families for extended periods. This shared experience of support continues to inspire the team, many of whom were raised by single parents.
Despite his experience with the Fijian Warriors and the Fiji Under-20 teams, Tabakaucoro remains humble and places importance on faith. He noted the coaching staff’s advice not to merely defend their title but to strive for victory.
In contrast, the Marist Brothers High School U18 team has chosen not to engage with the media ahead of the match, opting for a low-profile approach instead.
