Asilika Rinieta Qalo is set to represent the Fiji Airways Fiji women’s 7s team, marking an exciting milestone in her rugby career. At just 22 years old, Qalo hails from Nadogo, Saqani, and has maternal ties to Nakobo in Cakaudrove. She is among the new, uncapped players striving for a spot on the squad for the upcoming Dubai 7s tournament next weekend.
Qalo expressed that her journey to the national extended squad has been challenging. She embarked on her rugby career just two years ago, initially playing with the Police rugby team before moving on to Nasinu. “I thank God for this Fijiana 7s selection,” she remarked, emphasizing that wearing the national colors has always been a long-held dream, albeit one that has required significant effort.
Maintaining the rigorous training schedule in a high-performance environment while rising early each day has posed challenges for her. Nevertheless, Qalo credits her support system for helping her stay motivated. “A lot of people have motivated and advised me to humble myself,” she shared. Despite not anticipating her selection for the squad, she is prepared to take on her national responsibilities.
Qalo, a graduate of Nabua Secondary School, also participates in club netball alongside her rugby commitments. The Fijiana 7s team is set to depart this weekend for Dubai, where they will compete in Pool A against formidable teams such as Australia, Ireland, and China.
This moment not only highlights Qalo’s determination and dedication but also exemplifies the growing support for women in sports in Fiji. With the national team pinning hopes on new talent like Qalo, the future of women’s rugby in Fiji looks promising.
