The Public Works Department (PWD) is poised to resume operations effectively following its reinstatement by the government last year. In recent months since its closure by the previous administration, PWD has enhanced its capabilities with the arrival of three trucks, two excavators, and two bulldozers, which were delivered in Suva on Wednesday.
The handover ceremony for these earthmoving machines and trucks took place at the Vision Motors Showroom in Vatuwaqa, attended by officials from the Ministry of Public Works, Meteorological Services, and Transport.
Permanent Secretary Paula Baleilevuka remarked that the timely arrival of the new equipment would significantly contribute to infrastructure development and capacity building. He noted that these machines are part of a new collection intended for the ministry.
“These machines will improve road standards and conditions while facilitating access for economic activities,” Mr. Baleilevuka stated. “They will also strengthen our ability to conduct road construction and maintenance in rural and remote regions.”
The ministry acquired the following equipment:
– Two large excavators
– Two D6 bulldozers
– Two dumper trucks
– One flat-top truck
The total value of these eight machines is approximately $1,627,104. Additionally, for the current financial year, the Ministry has been allocated $5 million aimed at upgrading and improving rural roads. Mr. Baleilevuka confirmed that the new equipment and vehicles would be utilized in forthcoming projects.
