PWD Revamped: New Equipment Boosts Infrastructure Plans

The Public Works Department (PWD) is set to quickly resume its activities following its reinstatement by the government last year. In recent months, since being closed by the previous administration, the PWD has strengthened its operations with the arrival of three trucks, two excavators, and two bulldozers in Suva on Wednesday.

The handover of these earthmoving machines and trucks took place at the Vision Motors Showroom in Vatuwaqa, attended by officials from the Ministry of Public Works, Meteorological Services, and Transport.

Ministry permanent secretary Paula Baleilevuka noted that the prompt delivery of these new machines would significantly improve infrastructure and increase capacity. He stated that these vehicles are part of a new collection of equipment for the ministry.

“These machines will enhance road standards and conditions, facilitating accessibility for economic activities,” said Mr. Baleilevuka. He emphasized that they would also boost the department’s ability to conduct road construction and maintenance in rural and remote locations.

The ministry received two large excavators, two D6 bulldozers, two dumper trucks, and one flat-top truck, all valued at $1,627,104. For the current financial year, $5 million has been allocated to the Ministry to upgrade and enhance rural roads.

Mr. Baleilevuka confirmed that the newly acquired equipment and vehicles would be utilized in upcoming projects.
