The Public Works Department (PWD) is poised to resume its operations vigorously following its reinstatement by the government last year. In recent months since its closure by the previous administration, PWD has received a significant boost with the arrival of three trucks, two excavators, and two bulldozers in Suva on Wednesday.
The handover of the machinery took place at the Vision Motors Showroom in Vatuwaqa, where officials from the Ministry of Public Works, Meteorological Services, and Transport were present.
Paula Baleilevuka, the permanent secretary of the ministry, noted that the timely arrival of the new equipment would significantly improve infrastructure and support capacity building. He emphasized that these machines represent a new set of tools for the ministry.
“These machines will enhance road standards and conditions, making it easier to access economic activities,” Mr. Baleilevuka remarked. “They will also improve our ability to carry out road construction and maintenance in rural and remote areas.”
The ministry acquired a total of eight machines, including two large excavators, two D6 bulldozers, two dumper trucks, and one flat-top truck, with a combined worth of $1,627,104. For the current financial year, $5 million has been allocated for the upgrade and enhancement of rural roads, and Mr. Baleilevuka indicated that the new equipment would be utilized in upcoming projects.
