PWD Equipment Boost: What’s Next for Infrastructure?

The Public Works Department (PWD) is set to make significant strides following its reinstatement by the government last year. After a closure initiated by the previous administration, PWD has resumed operations and recently enhanced its capabilities with the acquisition of three trucks, two excavators, and two bulldozers, delivered in Suva on Wednesday.

The formal handover of this heavy machinery took place at the Vision Motors Showroom in Vatuwaqa, attended by officials from the Ministry of Public Works, Meteorological Services, and Transport. Paula Baleilevuka, the permanent secretary of the ministry, highlighted that the timely arrival of these new machines would significantly bolster infrastructure and capacity development.

Baleilevuka remarked that this equipment is part of a newly acquired set aimed at improving road standards and conditions, thereby facilitating better access for economic activities. He emphasized that the new machinery would enhance the ministry’s ability to conduct road construction and maintenance, particularly in rural and remote areas.

The newly received equipment includes two large excavators, two D6 bulldozers, two dumper trucks, and one flat-top truck, with a total value of $1,627,104. For the current financial year, the ministry has been allocated $5 million dedicated to upgrading and enhancing rural roads. Baleilevuka noted that these new assets will be utilized in upcoming projects.
