Put Family First: A Call to Shape Tomorrow’s Leaders

The chairman of the Great Council of Chiefs, Ratu Viliame Seruvakula, emphasized the importance of parental involvement during his address at the Ratu Sukuna Memorial School’s passing-out parade yesterday. He urged parents and guardians to prioritize their children’s development over personal interests, highlighting their essential role in shaping future generations.

Ratu Seruvakula noted that while educators and members of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces have established a strong foundation for the students, it is crucial for families to support their growth until they are capable of standing on their own. He expressed concern over the various challenges children face today, many of which they may not fully comprehend, and the detrimental effects these issues can have on their lives.

He pointed out that the young individuals parading are still navigating their developmental stages, emphasizing the need to prevent them from inheriting societal problems. Ratu Seruvakula mentioned serious threats like sexual violation, drug abuse, and child trafficking that currently affect children.

He appealed to parents to set aside personal distractions, such as socializing and seeking relief from stress, in order to focus on providing the best upbringing possible for their children. Ratu Seruvakula concluded by questioning whether parents want their children to grow up in a society characterized by injustice, apathy, and a lack of discipline.
