Public Prosecutions Director John Rabuku Reveals Exit Plan Amid Controversy

The Acting Director of Public Prosecutions, John Rabuku, has stated that the public calls for his resignation by the Attorney General and the President of the Fiji Law Society are attempts to undermine the role of the Judicial Services Commission in this matter.

Rabuku clarified that the Commission is fully aware of its responsibilities and has already discussed the way forward with him in two meetings this week. He emphasized that there is an established process that needs to be followed to ensure the smooth functioning of the Office of the DPP and to ensure a smooth transition for the staff upon his departure.

When asked if he had received any communication from the Cabinet regarding his resignation, Rabuku confirmed that he had not, noting that it is not the Cabinet’s role to communicate with him on this matter. He further added that the details of his departure have been discussed and decided with the Commission, and that the Commission will make the necessary announcements.

Rabuku acknowledged that the Supreme Court, as the highest court in the land, has issued an opinion that must be followed, regardless of his personal agreement with it. He stressed that the opinion does not constitute an order for him to vacate his office immediately, highlighting the importance of waiting for the Commission to follow proper procedures.

Rabuku urged lawyers to thoroughly read and understand the Supreme Court’s opinion in its entirety and emphasized the importance of senior lawyers comprehending their roles within the justice system.
