Pryde’s Plea: A Call for Transparency After 21 Months of Suspension

Christopher Pryde, the suspended Director of Public Prosecutions, has appealed to President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu for access to the Tribunal Report regarding alleged misconduct that led to his suspension. In his correspondence, Pryde noted that he learned the report was submitted to the President on December 23, 2024. After reaching out to the Tribunal for a copy, he was directed to contact the President’s office.

In his letter, which has also been made public, Pryde emphasized that according to section 112 (6) of the Constitution, the report is required to be released publicly, asserting that this is not a matter of discretion but an obligation. He referred to additional constitutional provisions, highlighting that section 112 (3)(c) mandates the President to act based on the Tribunal’s recommendations, and that section 112 (5) states that his suspension should end if the Tribunal finds insufficient evidence of misconduct.

Pryde expressed urgency in resolving the matter, noting that it has been almost 21 months since his suspension in April 2023 and nearly six months without his salary, which has caused significant financial strain. He formally requested that the President inform him of the report’s findings, deliver a copy of it to him, and if the evidence does not support the allegations, to lift his suspension and restore his salary and entitlements promptly.

This situation highlights the importance of transparency and due process in the judicial system. It serves as a reminder that individuals have the right to appeal for information affecting their careers and livelihoods, especially when constitutional provisions are at stake.

Overall, this situation underscores the need for timely resolutions in legal and administrative matters, fostering hope that a conclusion can be reached soon. With the Tribunal’s task completed, there is optimism that the report will shed light on the case and lead to a fair outcome for Pryde.
