Waqasaqa Votuwale has expressed immense joy as he celebrates his daughter, Maraia Vuniwaqa, being honored as the dux of Valebasoga Secondary School in Labasa. The 18-year-old excelled in her Year 13 annual examination, achieving a remarkable score of 405 out of 500 during the school’s award ceremony on Wednesday.
Mr. Votuwale, a 55-year-old kava farmer from Bouma Village, Taveuni, shared insights into the sacrifices he and his wife made to ensure their children’s education took priority. They made the significant decision to leave their village for Valebasoga, Labasa, to provide their children with better educational opportunities.
“It wasn’t an easy choice for our family,” Mr. Votuwale remarked. As the sole provider, he emphasized the importance of placing his children’s needs first, especially since he and his wife could not complete their secondary education due to financial hardships. He was determined not to let this be a limitation for his children.
Maraia’s achievement was consistent with her past performance, as she was also the dux of her school during the Fiji Year 12 Certificate Examination. With aspirations of becoming an accountant, Maraia expressed heartfelt gratitude toward her parents for their support and sacrifices. “As the head girl, I kept reminding myself to set a good example, which motivated me to aim for the dux award,” she shared. “I am thankful for my parents’ sacrifices, and I will surely make them proud.”
This story illustrates the power of determination and the importance of family support in achieving academic success. Maraia Vuniwaqa serves as an inspiring role model, showcasing that hard work and dedication can lead to outstanding accomplishments.
Overall, the family’s journey reflects a hopeful narrative about overcoming challenges through education and perseverance, emphasizing the positive impact of parental sacrifice on children’s futures.
