Te Pāti Māori co-leader Debbie Ngarewa-Packer participated in a protest of more than 400 individuals in Rarotonga against the Cook Islands Prime Minister Mark Brown’s Government. The demonstration occurred on Tuesday morning, just after Prime Minister Brown returned from China, where he signed a controversial partnership agreement that has caused tension with New Zealand.
Ngarewa-Packer, visiting the Cook Islands for her 30th wedding anniversary, expressed that she joined the protest at the request of the local community. She highlighted several pressing issues raised by residents, including concerns about changes to the Cook Islands passport and the implications of the Prime Minister’s dealings with China on both political and cultural fronts, referencing the significance of whakapapa (genealogy) to the community.
She echoed sentiments expressed by New Zealand leaders, including Prime Minister Christopher Luxon and Foreign Minister Winston Peters, emphasizing the lack of communication from Brown’s government regarding the partnership with China. Ngarewa-Packer criticized the lack of consultation with New Zealand, stressing the importance of preserving the relationship between the Cook Islands and Aotearoa.
“Leadership requires communication,” she stated, urging Prime Minister Brown to engage with his constituents more effectively. She raised concerns over ongoing issues, particularly Brown’s stance on seabed mining and its potential environmental impact, underscoring the community’s desire not to jeopardize their relationship with New Zealand.
