Protecting Our Future: Koro Minister’s Call to Local Education

The Minister of Justice, Siromi Turaga, is urging parents on Koro Island to enroll their children in Koro High School rather than sending them to urban schools due to social challenges currently facing Viti Levu.

Mr. Turaga made this appeal at a talanoa session held in Nasau Village, located in Mudu, Koro. He emphasized the importance of safeguarding children on the island, particularly as Koro High School prepares for its first Year 13 class.

“The urban environment has changed significantly, presenting many dangers. We must consider whether we want our children exposed to these issues or if we should protect them by allowing them to attend Koro High School before they continue to higher education,” he stated.

Mr. Turaga also outlined plans for introducing new programs at the school, including Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programs. He mentioned that the government has decided to allocate a salary for the school chaplain, underscoring the role of chaplains in fostering a positive educational environment.

“Education was brought to Fiji by missionaries, and we must ensure it continues. The absence of chaplains in schools often leads to different generational outcomes. We have significant work ahead of us. Today is important as we come together to listen and support one another,” he added.

Additionally, Vonevate Vetaukula, the Tui Nasau of Nasau Village, announced plans to purchase internet data from Starlink Services to aid the students’ learning needs. Currently, approximately 300 students are enrolled at Koro High School.
