The Minister for Justice, Siromi Turaga, is urging parents on Koro Island to enroll their children in Koro High School instead of urban schools due to rising social issues on Viti Levu.
During a talanoa session at Nasau Village in Mudu, Mr. Turaga emphasized the importance of protecting children on the island. He stated, “When we have Year 13 at Koro High School, I encourage you to send your children here.” He highlighted the dangers present in urban areas and the need for parents to consider whether they want their children exposed to these issues or to safeguard them by choosing local schooling before they continue to tertiary education.
Mr. Turaga announced that new programs would soon be available at Koro High School. “We will soon have TVET programs at the school here. Last week, the Government decided to provide a salary for the school chaplain, which is vital.” He pointed out the historical role of education brought by missionaries in Fiji and the necessity of chaplains in schools to foster a positive environment. “When chaplains are not present, we notice changes in generations. We have much work ahead of us, and today is significant for listening to one another.”
Additionally, the Tui Nasau of Nasau Village, Vonevate Vetaukula, mentioned that the village plans to purchase internet data from Starlink Services to benefit its students. Currently, Koro High School has around 300 students enrolled.
