Mohenesh Singh, the Counsellor and Founder of the Healing Hands Foundation, highlighted the rights and dignity of children in Fiji as enshrined in the constitution. He emphasized that protecting children from violence, exploitation, and abuse is both a moral duty and a legal requirement, supported by the Child Protection Policy and the Social Welfare Act of 2010.
Addressing a troubling social media incident where a father was seen using violence to teach his children numbers, Mr. Singh described the behavior as shocking and completely unacceptable. He pointed out that all forms of child abuse are intolerable under the law, asserting that learning cannot be forceful, as every child develops at their own pace.
Mr. Singh expressed concern over the still-pervasive culture where violence is seen as an acceptable means of control. He stated, “It is sad to see that some still believe inflicting harm is the way to get things done.”
He advocated for a nurturing learning environment where children feel involved and supported, urging the government to raise awareness about positive parenting skills, particularly targeting young parents. Drawing a parallel to driving tests, he proposed that young couples should also engage in family life training and positive parenting programs.
Stressing the importance of patience and commitment in parenting, Mr. Singh reminded that while bringing a child into the world is straightforward, providing adequate care requires effort and love. He encouraged parents to adopt child-friendly teaching methods such as songs, sand writing, and games to enhance learning experiences.
