Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Strategic Planning, National Development and Statistics, Professor Biman Prasad, emphasized the importance of reflecting on the teachings of Prophet Muhammad, who promoted peace, inclusivity, tolerance, and ethical behavior. His remarks were made in conjunction with the celebrations marking the Birthday of the Prophet, the founder of Islam.
Professor Prasad highlighted that the principles of social, ethical, moral, and religious conduct serve as a foundation for social, economic, and political development. He acknowledged the significant contributions made by various religious communities, particularly the Muslim community in Fiji, in areas such as education and spiritual development.
He reiterated that fostering lasting peace, harmony, and tolerance is crucial for achieving inclusivity, equality, dignity, and justice within the nation. Prasad recalled the historical decision in 1974, when the then National Federation Party and Opposition Leader, Hon Siddiq Moidin Koya, successfully negotiated with Prime Minister Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara to designate the celebrations of Prophet Muhammad’s Birthday and Diwali as public holidays, reflecting bipartisanship in the national interest.
In closing, he wished the Muslim community a blessed celebration of their Prophet’s Birthday in Fiji’s diverse and multi-religious society.
