Probe Demanded: Opposition Leader Questions Deputy’s Resignation

Opposition Leader Inia Seruiratu has stated that they will continue to advocate for justice regarding the resignation of Francis Puleiwai, the acting Deputy Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC). He emphasized the need for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding her departure.

Mr. Seruiratu posed three critical questions. Firstly, he questioned who instructed Ms. Puleiwai to delay filing charges after she had already provided advice on the matter. Secondly, he expressed concern that the Attorney-General did not mention Barbara Malimali’s ongoing contract with the Constitutional Offices Commission, which was signed by the President and pertains to her role as chairman of the Electoral Commission. Seruiratu demanded clarification on why Malimali was considered for her position if she had not resigned.

Lastly, he inquired as to why the investigation is continuing despite clear evidence that warrants a comprehensive examination. Mr. Seruiratu underscored the importance of these issues, highlighting the critical role of FICAC and the need to uphold democratic governance and the rule of law in Fiji. He stressed that investor confidence is paramount; without it, the country risks losing crucial economic opportunities and employment prospects.
