Oceania Rugby’s Participation and Pathway Manager, Tirani Uluinakauvadra, has asserted that safeguarding in sports should be a primary focus to effectively tackle abuse and foster safer environments. His comments came following the TEAM UP Regional Safeguarding Workshop held at Tanoa International Hotel last Thursday.
Uluinakauvadra emphasized the necessity for proactive measures in addressing this issue, acknowledging that many often prioritize the sport itself over safeguarding. He stated, “Safeguarding is probably something that is not on the priority list for some because, for us, it’s all about the game itself. However, with all the issues that come up, we want to make sure that we are proactive rather than being reactive.”
He pointed out the alarming prevalence of abuse within sports and the crucial role of education and awareness in guiding individuals toward existing support systems. Uluinakauvadra remarked, “Abuse does happen in sports. The issue is the lack of awareness and education—people don’t always understand the support systems available in their countries. There’s a lot of work to be done in this area.”
When probed about the responsibilities of sports administrators, he highlighted the importance of leadership and governance in instigating change. “It’s much easier for any change to happen when it comes from the top. In this situation, it is important for those at the governance and administration levels to understand this and champion creating a safe environment for everyone in sports,” he explained.
The workshop succeeded in gathering athletes and sports administrators from the region to deliberate on effective safeguarding mechanisms, further showcasing Oceania Rugby’s dedication to confronting safeguarding challenges. Uluinakauvadra’s insights underline a collective commitment to ensuring that sports remain a safe and nurturing space for all participants.
In summary, this initiative signals an important shift towards prioritizing safety and well-being in sports, paving the way for a supportive environment where all athletes can thrive. The steps taken in this direction reflect a hopeful outlook for the future of sports, as awareness and education become cornerstones in the fight against abuse.
