Oceania Rugby’s Participation and Pathway Manager, Tirani Uluinakauvadra, has emphasized the urgent need for prioritizing safeguarding in sports to combat abuse and create safer environments. This call to action followed the TEAM UP Regional Safeguarding Workshop held at the Tanoa International Hotel.
Uluinakauvadra noted that safeguarding has often been overlooked because many focus primarily on the game itself. However, he asserts that it is essential to adopt proactive measures rather than react to incidents after they occur. He highlighted the stark reality of abuse in sports and stressed the importance of education and awareness in utilizing available support systems effectively.
“The issue is the lack of awareness and education,” Uluinakauvadra remarked. “Many people are unaware of the support systems in their countries, and significant work remains to be done in this area.”
He further explained that sports administrators play a critical role in driving change, emphasizing the need for leadership at governance levels to facilitate these changes. “Change is more easily implemented when it comes from the top,” he stated, indicating the necessity for those in leadership positions to advocate for a safe sports environment for everyone involved.
The workshop gathered athletes and sports administrators from the region to explore strategies for enhancing safeguarding in sports. Uluinakauvadra’s insights demonstrate Oceania Rugby’s dedication to addressing these challenges, ensuring that all sports participants feel secure and supported.
In summary, prioritizing safeguarding in sports is essential not just for immediate protection, but for cultivating a long-term culture of safety and respect within the sporting community. By focusing on education, awareness, and proactive leadership, the sports community in Oceania can make significant strides toward a safer environment for all athletes. This initiative represents a hopeful step toward the positive transformation of sports culture.
