Prime Minister Weighs in on Death Penalty Debate Amid Controversy

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has expressed his belief that the death penalty is not an effective solution to the country’s drug issues, despite suggestions that it could serve as a deterrent. He highlighted a significant concern regarding the irreversible nature of the death penalty, noting that there have been instances globally where new evidence emerged after executions that could have altered the verdicts.

“We must be cautious and take into account the wider implications of such irreversible decisions,” Rabuka stated. This response comes in light of recent comments made by Lynda Tabuya, the Minister of Women, Children and Social Protection, who called for death penalties for drug traffickers.

Following her statement, a wave of criticism has erupted from politicians, religious leaders, and human rights advocates, urging the Prime Minister to either dismiss Tabuya or take disciplinary measures against her. Rabuka indicated that he has not yet discussed the matter with Tabuya and is waiting for a formal complaint before proceeding.
