Prime Minister Rabuka Crowned as Samoan Chief: A New Chapter Unfolds

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has been honored with a matai (chief) title, becoming a chief of the village of Leauva’a in Samoa. The title of ‘tagaloa’alagi,’ which is a prestigious chief title in Samoa, was conferred upon him during a ceremony held yesterday. This new title also designates Leauva’a as Mr. Rabuka’s Samoan home.

The ceremony was led by the Archbishop and the Leader of the Catholic Church in Samoa, who conducted a traditional service followed by a kava ceremony to formally bestow the title. The ‘tagaloa’alagi’ title is associated with one of Samoa’s historical kings from the pre-missionary era.

During his address, Mr. Rabuka emphasized the unity among church leaders, stating, “We aspire to continue to demonstrate and show to the world the close kinship we have in our part of the world.”

The atmosphere in Leauva’a was filled with a spirit of camaraderie as villagers, from the highest-ranking chiefs to local youth, gathered to warmly welcome Mr. Rabuka and his delegation. Banners proclaiming “Bula Vinaka!” were visible, alongside houses displaying the Fijian flag.

As part of the ceremony, Mr. Rabuka received significant gifts, including three elei shirts, a Samoan-made tanoa, a fue (fly switch), and a to’oto’o (wooden staff). These items hold cultural significance in Samoan tradition, with the fue representing the wisdom of an orator and the to’oto’o embodying authority.

Mr. Rabuka expressed gratitude, saying, “May God’s blessings rest on us forever, I receive this yaqona on behalf of the leaders and the people of Fiji,” and concluded with “Ni sa bula!”
