Prime Minister Challenges Death Penalty Debate Amid Drug Crisis

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has expressed his belief that the death penalty is not a viable solution to the country’s drug issues, despite suggestions that it could serve as a deterrent. He highlighted that one of the major concerns surrounding capital punishment is its irreversible nature.

“Globally, there have been instances where new evidence has come to light years after an execution that could have affected the verdict,” Rabuka stated. He emphasized the importance of carefully considering the far-reaching consequences of such permanent decisions.

The debate has intensified following remarks from Lynda Tabuya, Minister of Women, Children, and Social Protection, who proposed that death sentences should be applied to drug traffickers. Since her comments, various politicians, religious figures, and human rights advocates have urged Rabuka to either dismiss Tabuya or impose disciplinary measures against her.

In response to inquiries regarding the controversy, Rabuka noted that he has yet to have a discussion with Tabuya about the matter and is waiting for a formal complaint to address the issue.
