Pressure Mounts on PM to Dismiss Controversial Minister in Fiji

Opposition MP Ketan Lal is urging Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka to promptly remove Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection Lynda Tabuya from her position.

In his statement, Lal emphasized that the people of Fiji deserve a government that upholds human rights and social justice. He called for immediate and decisive action from the Prime Minister, asserting that Fiji needs leadership that is compassionate, informed, and committed to justice. Lal criticized Tabuya’s actions and statements, claiming they indicate she is no longer suitable for her role.

He accused Tabuya of showing a troubling disregard for human rights and justice, which he described as vital to democracy. Lal specifically pointed out her support for the death penalty, arguing that it not only demonstrates a serious misunderstanding of effective crime prevention but also conflicts with global human rights standards. He defined this issue as not merely a disagreement over policy, but rather a significant violation of the duties and ethical standards tied to her ministerial role.

“I must reiterate my deep concern regarding the recent and alarming stance taken by the Minister, advocating for the reintroduction of the death penalty for those dealing drugs in large quantities. While I have previously condemned this reckless and regressive proposal, it is now clear that further action is necessary,” Lal stated.

FijiLive has reached out to Minister Tabuya for her comments.
