The Pacific Islands News Association (PINA) has reiterated the importance of upholding freedom of expression and press freedom throughout the Pacific region. Concerns have arisen following a defamation lawsuit filed by Surangel Whipps Jr.’s father, Surangel Whipps Snr., against the national newspaper, Island Times Palau.
On October 29, Whipps Snr.’s company, Surangel and Sons, initiated the civil lawsuit against editor Leilani Reklai. The next day, President Surangel Whipps Jr. addressed reporters, criticizing Island Times for allegedly disseminating political propaganda that he described as inaccurate.
In a statement, PINA expressed its commitment to providing both regional and international support for Reklai. The association’s president, Kalafi Moala, emphasized the media’s role as a defender of democracy, stating that the current situation necessitates immediate action for freedom, not only in Palau but throughout the Pacific.
Moala pointed out persistent issues surrounding freedom of speech and press in some countries, indicating that there appears to be intimidation from those in power. He condemned attempts to intimidate the media in Palau and communicated PINA’s concerns in a letter to the President’s office.
He underscored that freedom of speech and democracy are interconnected, highlighting the critical nature of these principles as Palauans headed to the polls.
This call for media freedom in Palau is a positive step towards reinforcing democratic values in the region and ensuring that journalists can operate without fear of retribution. Such advocacy is essential for the health of democracy, enabling open dialogue and accountability within governance.
In summary, the advocacy from PINA reflects a broader commitment to protect journalists and support free press in the Pacific, a vital component for any democratic society.
