The Pacific Islands News Association (PINA) is advocating for the protection of freedom of expression and press freedom across the Pacific region. This call comes in response to a defamation lawsuit initiated by the father of Palau’s President Surangel Whipps Jr. against Island Times Palau, the national newspaper.
On October 29, former President Whipps Sr.’s company, Surangel and Sons, filed the civil lawsuit against the newspaper’s editor, Leilani Reklai. In a news conference the following day, President Whipps Jr. criticized the publication, claiming that it disseminates “political propaganda” that lacks accuracy.
In light of these developments, PINA expressed its support for Reklai and emphasized the importance of a free press in defending democracy. The association’s president, Kalafi Moala, highlighted the necessity of free speech and press freedom not solely in Palau but throughout the Pacific. He articulated concerns regarding growing opposition and intimidation that media outlets face in certain nations.
PINA recently sent a letter to the Palau President’s office to voice its apprehensions regarding this lawsuit, which they believe serves to intimidate the media. Moala underscores the interconnection between freedom of speech and democracy, underscoring its significance just as Palauans participated in elections.
This situation highlights the critical role of media in fostering democratic values, making it paramount for support systems to be established for journalists and media organizations facing legal challenges. The collective effort by organizations like PINA can help safeguard the liberties that are essential for a vibrant and transparent democratic process.
By bringing attention to these issues, there’s hope that increased awareness can lead to reinforced protections for press freedom across the region, ultimately benefiting society as a whole.
