President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere is poised to secure a second term in office at the end of the month. The Parliamentary Business Committee has scheduled a meeting for Parliament on October 31 at 11 am to appoint the President. Sources indicate that Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has nominated Ratu Wiliame for this position.
Parliament initially planned to nominate and appoint a President on October 3; however, this agenda item was postponed due to concerns raised by Mr. Rabuka regarding a potential division in the presidential nomination process. Following this, Mr. Rabuka asked Speaker of Parliament Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu to withdraw the nomination item, citing some “discomfort” surrounding his choice for the presidential candidate.
The Opposition has yet to make any public statements regarding their nomination plans.
