President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere is anticipated to secure a second term in office by the end of the month. The Parliamentary Business Committee has scheduled a meeting for Parliament on October 31 at 11 am to appoint a new President.
According to sources, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has nominated Ratu Wiliame for the position. Initially, Parliament was slated to nominate and appoint a President on October 3, with this item marked as number four on the parliamentary agenda.
However, this item was postponed after Prime Minister Rabuka indicated that there was a potential division regarding the presidential nomination. He subsequently requested the Speaker of Parliament, Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, to withdraw item number four, citing some “discomfort” surrounding his nomination.
The Opposition has not revealed their nomination plans.
