President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere is poised to secure a second term in office at the end of this month. The Parliamentary Business Committee has scheduled a meeting for Parliament on October 31 at 11 am to appoint the next President. Sources have indicated that Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has nominated Ratu Wiliame for the position.
Initially, Parliament was set to nominate and appoint a President on October 3; however, this discussion was postponed after Mr. Rabuka revealed potential issues regarding the presidential nomination. Mr. Rabuka subsequently requested the Speaker of Parliament, Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, to withdraw the nomination agenda item, citing some concerns over the presidential candidacy.
The Opposition has yet to disclose their nomination strategy.
