President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere is anticipated to secure a second term in office later this month. The Parliamentary Business Committee has confirmed that Parliament will convene on October 31 at 11 AM to officially appoint a President.
Sources indicate that Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has nominated Ratu Wiliame for the position. During a parliamentary session on October 3, there was an agenda item to nominate and appoint a President, but this was postponed due to reports of discord regarding the presidential nomination.
Rabuka subsequently asked the Speaker of Parliament, Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, to withdraw the agenda item due to some ‘discomfort’ surrounding his nomination. The Opposition has not disclosed their stance on the nomination at this time.
