President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere is likely to secure a second term as the country’s leader by the end of this month. The Parliamentary Business Committee has scheduled a meeting for Parliament on October 31 at 11 am to officially appoint a new President. Reports indicate that Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has nominated Ratu Wiliame for this position.
Initially, Parliament was set to nominate and appoint a new President on October 3, with the official business item listed as number 4 on the agenda for that session. However, this agenda item was postponed following Mr. Rabuka’s acknowledgment of potential issues regarding the presidential nomination. Subsequently, Mr. Rabuka requested that Speaker of Parliament Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu withdraw item number 4 due to some “discomfort” surrounding his nomination.
The Opposition has not disclosed any information regarding their own nomination plans.
