President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere is anticipated to secure his second term in office by the end of the month. The Parliamentary Business Committee has confirmed that Parliament will convene on October 31 at 11 AM to appoint a President.
Sources indicate that Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka intends to nominate Ratu Wiliame. A previous meeting on October 3 was scheduled to nominate and appoint a President, but the agenda was deferred after Mr. Rabuka communicated concerns regarding a potential rift in the presidential nomination process.
Subsequently, Mr. Rabuka requested the Speaker of Parliament, Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, to withdraw the nomination item from the agenda, mentioning ‘discomfort’ surrounding his presidential nomination. The Opposition has not disclosed their nomination plans.
