President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere is anticipated to secure a second term in office later this month. The Parliamentary Business Committee has scheduled a meeting for Parliament on October 31 at 11 am to appoint a new President. Information suggests that Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has nominated Ratu Wiliame for the position.
Initially, Parliament was set to nominate and appoint a President on October 3, but this agenda item was postponed following Mr. Rabuka’s acknowledgment of a potential rift regarding the presidential nomination. He subsequently asked Speaker of Parliament Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu to withdraw the agenda item due to some “discomfort” surrounding the nomination process.
The Opposition has not revealed any information about their own nomination.
