President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere is anticipated to secure a second term in office by the end of this month. The Parliamentary Business Committee has scheduled a parliamentary session for October 31 at 11 am to officially appoint a President. Reports indicate that Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has nominated Ratu Wiliame for the position.
Originally, Parliament was set to nominate and appoint a President on October 3, as reflected in item number 4 on the agenda. However, the nomination was postponed following Mr. Rabuka’s confirmation of a potential disagreement regarding the presidential nomination. Subsequently, Mr. Rabuka requested the Speaker of Parliament, Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, to withdraw item number 4, mentioning some ‘discomfort’ related to his nomination.
The Opposition has not revealed their stance on the matter yet.
