The President of Fiji, Wiliame Katonivere, emphasized the significance of reflection during his remarks at the Judicial Officers Workshop held in Nadi over the weekend. In his three years as Head of State, President Katonivere has observed important developments within the Judiciary sector and views this workshop as a key opportunity for judicial officials to share insights and strengthen their professional relationships.
He underscored the Judiciary’s critical role as an essential branch of government, urging participants to reflect on both their accomplishments and challenges. “Reflection enables us to evaluate our decisions and actions and fortifies our future pathways,” he stated, stressing the need for insight and intentionality in service to the community and nation.
The President also reminded the judicial officers of their significant responsibilities as defenders of the rule of law, highlighting integrity and dignity as guiding principles in their profession. He pointed out that impartiality, fairness, and efficiency are the foundational elements of a democratic society.
Katonivere reiterated the Judiciary’s Vision Statement, which aims to uphold an independent and impartial judicial system, also emphasizing the importance of accountability in fulfilling this commitment. He encouraged the officers to be mindful of their decision-making processes and to maintain checks and balances to uphold the rule of law.
Furthermore, he called for stronger collaboration with international partners and regional stakeholders, advocating for the use of resources and technological advancements to enhance judicial standards. He urged the judiciary community to learn from one another, share valuable lessons, and implement these learnings with the integrity expected of their profession.
