President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere is anticipated to secure a second term when Parliament convenes at the end of the month. The Parliamentary Business Committee has scheduled a meeting for October 31 at 11 am to officially appoint a President.

According to reports, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has nominated Ratu Wiliame for the position. A previous session on October 3 was intended for nominating and appointing a President, but the agenda was changed after Mr. Rabuka indicated potential issues with the presidential nomination. He requested the Speaker of Parliament, Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, to withdraw the nomination item from the agenda, citing ‘discomfort’ surrounding his choice.

The Opposition has not disclosed any information regarding their own presidential nomination.
